Product Yields
Most people think that yield is only determined by pages printed or copied. Many factors are used to determine the yield of toner cartridges, drum units, fuser assemblies, transfer belts, and other consumables.
Toner yield is determined by page coverage. The industry standard is 5% coverage per page, this means that 95% of the page printed or copied does not have any toner on it. The more coverage or print on the page the more toner that is used. Customers that print pictures, use bold print, or have large areas of coverage will use more toner. This means the yield of the toner will change depending on the coverage of the prints or copies done on the equipment. By changing the exposure settings or print density on the printer or copier customers can extend the yield of the toner.
On some equipment drum units, fuser assemblies, transfer belts, and other consumables yields are determined by copy or print counts. Other machines use a complex formula. This formula takes copy count, toner coverage, and run time to calculate the remaining life of the consumable units.
